    My Little League Band – Debut Performance

    My last post was about the band of 11-13 year olds I have been coaching.  They recently had their debut performance at a blues jam here in Utah. We are now taking bookings. Assuming you only want an 8 minute set. (or you want to hear the same 2 songs 5 times each.) Check out the videos: Tighten Up Pride and Joy

    A band for beginners

    A few months ago I was ready to graduate a couple of my guitar students.  I didn’t have much more I could teach them about theory or technique.  They just needed to practice for a few years and they would be great. But one thing I noticed they lacked was the ability to play well with others.  I thought they could benefit from playing in a band setting, but since they were 11 and 13, I wasn’t sure turning them loose would be a good idea. So I converted their private lesson time into a 1 hour

    Listening to Josh Ritter – Bringing In The Darlings

    Josh Ritter recently released a new EP.  This isn’t a collection or random B-sides and other previously rejected cuts.  The songs are all new, well written, and well produced. My only complaint- It isn’t it a full album. This video features one of the tracks from the EP.  This video was created with over 12,000 pieces of construction paper, shown as it was shot, with no effects added in post. Wowza. Finishing a Taylor 916ce, Time Lapse Video

    Wow.  Andre spends half the time getting the nut just right.  How many guitars have the nut, neck, and strings all installed by the same guy at the same time.  Very impressive

    A Studio in a Box: The Controversial World of the Amp Modeler

    In the grand list of things that guitar players argue about, there is nothing that quite stokes the fires in the same way as amp modeling. Whether it’s the classic Kidney Bean POD or the fully endorsed tweakfest that is Peavey’s Revalver III, something about the combination of guitars and software can turn the most relaxed guitarist into a chair-leg wielding, vendetta-carrying psychopath. However much the hatred may flow through the haters, though, I find it becomes harder and harder to argue with the technology that the modelers can bring to a recording. That’s why I’ve put

    5 Duties when Teaching Guitar to Kids

    I had my first guitar student when I was 17.  He was 13. Recently he ran into my mom and reminded her what I told him on his first lesson:  ”Playing guitar is a great way to meet chicks.”  It was true then, and it is true now. Since that time I have taught dozens of kids to play guitar.  But more than teaching them the mechanics of reading chord diagrams, music, and tab, I believe a guitar teacher is critical for filling many other important roles.  Here are my top 5.  If you are not a

    Electrifying Archtop – Budget Tone

    A few months ago I was checking out Archtop guitars online when a non-guitar player buddy told me he had “one of those” in his basement.  He got it from his father in law, and it just sits there.  He wanted a new video game, so I thought we could make a deal. I opened the case to see a 1955 Gibson L48 in pristine condition.  Then I woke up. Actually, I opened the case to see a 1960 Harmony.  The body had a few nicks and dings, but it was in great shape.  The neck was

    @Digitech iStomp – A hands-on review

    The year in guitar effects has been pretty mild, with the exception of the Digitech iStomp.  In my opinion, this is a pretty big shift in the world of the traditional stomp box.  Unlike Digitech’s earlier foray into the iOS space with the iPad-based IPB-10, the iStomp is practical and affordable (besides being cool.) Out of the Box The first impressive aspect of the iStomp is the slim form.  This thing is about the size of two iphones stacked on top of each other.  Not bad for a pedal that can do so much. The idea of

    GrooveTech Guitar Toolkit by Cruz Tools

    As a long time guitar player, at one point I bought a large set of Allen wrenches so I could adjust the truss rods on my guitars and the saddles on my Telecaster. The kit came with about 50 different sizes, including one that is so large it doesn’t fit in the tray in my tool chest where I keep the others.  As a young child I was taught that any tool is worth having, and will someday be handy.  So I can’t get rid of the thing.  It just sits there getting in the way until
